Tigo and BIMA launch hospital cover for children in Tanzania
Tigo in partnership with BIMA (known locally as MILVIK Tanzania) and ResolutionInsurance, teamed up with leading media personality and mother of three, Zamaradi Mketema, to launchBima Mkononi hospital with children inpatient cover on Tigo Pesa. The product offers affordable insurance to all Tigo Pesa customers and up to five children for just 750 Tsh per month per child.
Tigo Pesa can now add their children, aged 1 to 17, to their Bima Mkononi Hospitalcover and receive 40,000 Tsh ($17usd) cash back for every night they may need to stay in the hospital. The product is 1,500 Tsh per month for the customer and an additional 750 Tsh per child, deducted automatically from the customer’s Tigo Pesa wallet every month, making it one less thing for customers to worry about. Claims are paid directly to customers’ Tigo Pesa wallet.

Insurance penetration in Tanzania is low with only 15% of adult Tanzanians having access to insurance and insurance contributing to only 0.9% of the GDP. MILVIK, Tigo and Resolution are committed to contributing to the Tanzania National Financial Inclusion Framework (NFIF2 2018-2022) to deliver customer-centric financial products that meet the needs of customers to supportlivelihood improvement, as well as to continue to educate low income customers about how insurance works, in line with TIRA National Insurance Education Strategy (2016 -2020). Bima Mkononi insurance products are simple - meeting the needs of low-income customers that the traditional insurance sector has not addressed, providing very simple terms and conditions that are easy to understand.
Registration for the product is simple. Customers can register on their phones via USSD. Valid claims can be made through Whatsapp, email or Tigo branches and claims are paid within 3 days of receiving valid documents.
